Villarrica is located in the Province of Cautín, in the Region of La Araucanía, 760 kilometers away from Santiago. It is an area where tourism is experienced throughout the year due to its privileged location close to lakes, mountains, forests and rivers, standing out in summer time where it receives a large number of visits of people seeking to enjoy the cultural and sports activities.
In its origins, the city was linked to gold and silver mining, but today the main economic activity revolves around tourism. The national parks that are located in its vicinity are a great attraction for its rich flora, fauna and the beautiful landscapes that it offers, such as the Villarrica National Park that has 65,000 hectares and the Huerquehue National Park with 12,500 hectares. Nearby is the town of Lican Ray, which is very popular in summer due to the warm temperatures of its waters. The Toltén River is also part of the attractions where it is possible to practice sport fishing.
The historic center of the city has a rich contemporary architecture despite being the sixth oldest city in Chile. Some important buildings are the Cathedral of Villarrica, the Municipality and the Diocese of Villarrica, the Yachting Building, Villarrica Mirador and the Don Eulogio Building.
