As part of the province of Valdivia, in the Los Ríos Region, on the shore of Lake Calafquen, is the town of Coñaripe, a place conceived to be one of the main lumber centers in Chile, but currently it is one of the main tourist destinations of the region.
In 1881, after the Pacification of Araucanía, the war for dominance of the Mapuche territories, foreigners began to displace the indigenous inhabitants towards the Andean sector, which today is known as Coñaripe. Years later, in the 20th century, Chileans began to arrive in these lands, and with the support of the Mapuche judge of Pitrufquén, they bought part of the lands adjacent to the lake in order to found the town and start the timber industry in the zone, through the exploitation of the surrounding native forests.
Little by little, the growth of the town allowed the Mapuche communities to benefit and begin to develop economically.
Until 2002, the town had 1,461 inhabitants, a figure that increases in the summer season since there are hundreds of tourists who come to enjoy the Coñaripe Hot Springs.
Also, in the Coñaripe-Liquiñe axis there are the many hot springs on the Ruta de la Salud. The most notable are: Termas de Coñaripe, Termas Trafipán, EcoTermas Pellaifa, Termas de Vergara, Termas Geométricas, Termas del Rincón, Termas Río Liquiñe, among others.
One of the must-see places is the Villarrica National Park where you can walk the Jabalí Trail, which begins in Freire, in the Araucanía Region and passes through Villarrica, Lican Ray, Coñaripe and Liquiñe.
