ABOUT Copiapó

Copiapó has an arid climate, where desert hills stand out with minimum temperatures in winter of 0° C and maximum temperatures of 32° C in summer. It is one of the most popular destinations for lovers of adventure and relaxation in natural spaces. This destination is famous for mountaineering in the Nevados de Incahuasi and the Volcan Nevado Ojos del Salado, the highest in the world at 6,879 meters above sea level.

Some natural wonders of the area that you cannot miss while in Copiapó are the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, the excursions to Laguna Verde, Laguna Santa Rosa and Laguna Negro Francisco. Towards the north of the city you can visit the Pan de Azúcar National Park which is home to a wide variety of animals and which survives thanks to the fog, known as camanchaca, which reaches the place from the Pacific Ocean.

In Copiapó you can find a fauna in which pink flamingos, geese and ducks coexist, as well as the Flowery Desert, a unique phenomenon in the world that occurs in the years when the rainfall in the place is more abundant than usual and that dresses the desert of flowers between the months of September and November.

The seasides of Playa la Virgen or Bahía Inglesa that are close to the city surprise with their turquoise waters. Other beaches that can be visited are Punta Cachos, Caleta Pajonal, Totoral and Hacienda Castilla.

There are religious festivities that are also quite popular, such as the Festival of the Virgen de la Candelaria that brings together more than 120 thousand faithful, as well as the Fiesta del Carmen. In the historic center of the city you can find several historical monuments such as the Cathedral Church that is next to the Copiapó square, the Railway Station, the “La Copiapó” Locomotive that was the first railway that circulated in Chile, the Villa Viña de Cristo house, the House of the Railroad Employees and the Consistorial Building that currently houses the house of culture of the city. The main access road to Copiapó is the Panamerican highway number 5, and land transportation is concentrated in the Copiapó Bus Terminal located in Chañarcillo 680.
