ABOUT Parque Nacional Bosque Fray Jorge

One of the wonderful advantages of Chile is its extensive border with the Pacific Ocean, such proximity to the sea has given this country amazing and unique viewpoints. But what happens when fauna, vegetation, the Milky Way and the immensity of the sea come together in one place? All this and more is what the Bosque Fray Jorge National Park offers.

Since its opening in 1941, the Bosque Fray Jorge National Park has been dedicated to the conservation of the relict forest that forms it and which has been considered by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. This park is located in Ovalle, a city that belongs to the Coquimbo Region and it is one of the obligatory places to visit in northern Chile.

With more than 8,000 hectares, this park is characterized by being a forest whose vegetation obtains the necessary humidity to survive through the coastal fog that comes from the Pacific Ocean. Throughout this natural reserve, you can see wildlife such as foxes, guanacos and endless birds, among them we can mention the common eagle and the peuco.

Within the park's trails you can also find some archaeological sites that give clues to what life was like for the original inhabitants of the region. But that is not all, the reserve hides other secrets, the Fray Jorge Park was declared a starlight site in November 2013. This means that it is an ideal place to perform astronomical visualization, which is possible because it is an area completely free of light pollution.

On the way to the park, you will find a little town known as Pedal Ojo del Agua, and in it you can find what is said to be "the best goat cheese in the region", as well as local restaurants and other cultural manifestations. Small towns that are within the reserve, serve as camping sites, as the park itself has not qualified areas for such activities.
