The Alerce Andino National Park is part of the Biosphere Reserve of Temperate Rainy Forests of the Southern Andes and contains the largest number of Andean Alerces in Chile, which is why it owes its name.
With an extension of more than 39,000 hectares, the Alerce Andino National Park is a reserve that was inaugurated in 1982 for the conservation of flora and fauna that inhabits the territory. The park is in the Los Lagos Region, specifically 40 kilometers away from the city of Puerto Montt, the capital city of the region.
Within the predominant flora of the Alerce Andino National Park, there is a huge evergreen forest, but in the middle of all the flora, the alerce stands out, a species that covers more than 20,000 hectares of the park. It develops just when the terrain exceeds 400 meters above sea level. But beyond the pretty floral peculiarity of the park, the fauna also attracts because of the presence of plenty of mammals and wild birds.
The amazing trails of the Alerce Andino National Park attract thousands of tourists a year. These normally include a visit to a lagoon, among the most valued are: Sargazo Lagoon, Cold Lagoon, Chaiquenes Lagoon and Triangle Lagoon. Each trail has a different type of difficulty, so there is something for everyone. The lagoons are usually the ideal places for picnics and camping.
Many elements of the cultural heritage of the Mapuche ethnic group are preserved in the surroundings of the Alerce Andino National Park. At the same time, the acquired cultural influence of the European settlers, mainly German, is evident because on the way to the park you can find cultural manifestations of both communities, represented by a huge variety of gastronomy and crafts.
