Lebu is a small town that is the capital of the Arauco Province in the Biobío Region. Its name comes from the Mapudungun leuvu which means "river". The climate of Lebu is defined as warm and temperate, in winter it has frequent rains with an average temperature of 10 °C, while in summer it is drier with temperatures around 16 °C.
During the 19th century, Lebu experienced an economic boom due to the development of local mining, however, it is currently concentrated in artisanal fishing, this being the main economic activity of most of its inhabitants. Among the main tourist attractions of the commune is the Caverna de Benavides, these large rock formations measure up to 40 meters high, and are located 3 km north of the city center. In the Plaza de Armas de Lebu you can see two of the four cannons manufactured by Johannes Espinoza in the Viceroyalty of Peru, and Niño Pez, which is a water source that shows the image of a newt boy, which was donated by Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna for the city, both works were declared as Historical Monuments.
Lebu's landscapes are full of small bays, old pirate caves and steep cliffs, many define it as an unknown jewel of South American geography.
