El Chaltén is a small town in the Lago Argentino department in the Province of Santa Cruz. It is located in the southernmost part of the country, on the banks of the Río de las vueltas and at the foot of Mount Fitz Roy.
It is given the name of El Chaltén in honor of the mountain of the same name that is located nearby, this mountain is surrounded by ice fields and it is located on the edge that separates Chile from Argentina, in fact, a few kilometers to the south of its location it is the last undefined border area between the two countries. Cerro Chaltén or Mount Fitz Roy, as it is also called, is part of two national parks, these are the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park in Chile and the Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina, both characterized by their winter landscapes and imposing mountains.
El Chaltén is located 398 meters above sea level and its climate is typical of Patagonia, abundant in winds, clouds and rainfall, so it is very likely that during your visit, especially in the colder months, you will face rain or snow. The months with the highest temperatures are January and February where it can reach up to 20 °C, however, at night it can drop to 7 °C.
El Chaltén is considered by many as the Argentine capital of trekking, due to its geographical location it is the perfect place for this activity, it has routes with different levels of difficulty, but no matter which one you choose, the best views of Patagonia are guaranteed.
One of the closest cities that represents an important access route to El Chaltén is El Calafate, located 213 km away towards the south of Argentina. To get to El Chaltén you can do it from the El Calafate International Airport and then go by land on National Route 40 and Provincial Route 41 in a journey of approximately 3 hours.
But if you want to mobilize by collective transport, don't worry, since the buses that make this route operate throughout the year, with at least two daily departures, one in the morning and another one in the afternoon. But usually during the high season a third frequency is added at noon.
