Coyhaique is the capital city of the province of the same name, located in the Aysén Region. It is located to the east of the Andes Mountains, in Chilean Patagonia at an average height of 310 meters above sea level, at the place where the Simpson and Coyhaique rivers converge. The city is located 660 km from Puerto Montt and more than 1,000 km away from Santiago; Despite being considered remote, it connects with the rest of the region by different roads, especially by route number 7 of the Carretera Austral, and with the rest of Chile through the panamerican highway number 5.
This city is the youngest regional capital of Chile, since it was founded in 1929 at the foot of the majestic rocky massif Cerro Mackay. The climate of Coyhaique is of the rainy maritime type, which is quite rigorous due to the latitude of the city, presenting itself with cold all year round and rainfall between 800 and 1200 mm annually with winter snows. The minimum absolute temperature has reached −26 °C and the absolute maximum in summer has reached 35 °C. Coyhaique, like the entire Aysén Region, offers a diversity of landscapes ranging from the Patagonian pampas, to forests that always remain green and adorn the coast, it is also the starting place to approach the fjords and characteristic channels of the region.
The Plaza de Armas de Coyhaique stands out among all because it has a pentagonal shape, the only one of its kind in all of Chile. The square has ten entrances, nine streets and a pedestrian promenade, all of which lead to the center of it; this particular square concentrates all the urban life of the locals. In addition to the plaza, Coyhaique has natural attractions like Lake Elizalde, Valle de la Luna, Lake Caro, Laguna Verde, Piedra del Indio, Reserve Río Simpson, Lake La Paloma and Villa Ortega.
