Known as the pearl of the north, that’s Antofagasta, city, port and commune of Chile.With a hot climate and few vegetation, because it’s located in one the most arid desert of the world, the Desert of Atacama.
The climate of Antofagasta keeps its temperature between 18°C and 28°C because of its desert location. During winter it doesn’t exceed this minimum, but during summer it can reach over 30°C.
Until 1929 Antofagasta was economically dependent on salpeter mining, but this activity was replaced by copper mining. Nowadays Chile is the biggest copper exporter of the world, being Codelco the mining administrative company, wich it’s located in Antofagasta.
Some of the tourist attractions that are located in the Pearl of the North include La Portada Natural Monument, one of the 15 protected natural monuments in Chile. This natural beauty is a geomorphological accident composed of volcanic rocks and fossil remains that reaches a height of 43 meters and a width of 70 meters.
Another focus of attention for travelers is the La Chimba National Reserve, one of the 52 natural reserves in Chile, located 15 kilometers away from Antofagasta. It is an arid landscape that offers up to ninety species of fauna and flora.
Another of the beauties found in Antofagasta are the artificial beaches built because the coast of the Pacific Ocean is rocky, not suitable for bathing. Some of them are El Trocadero, Paraíso, El Huáscar, La Rinconada and Juan López.
The Andrés Sabella International Airport is an airport that is located 26 kilometers north of the city of Antofagasta, after the panamerican highway number 5, this airport is the main access route to the Antofagasta Region, and at kupos.cl we indicate you how to move from the Andrés Sabella International Airport to Antofagasta.

An old creek that left its furrow between the sandstone; mystical and almost unknown is the Quebrada Carrizo.
This amazing place is 8 kilometers away from the center of Antofagasta, and its access is through a sandy path that is in the middle of a desert landscape. The figures that adorn the land are beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The Quebrada Carrizo gives peace and harmony. From here you can take the best pictures!
Hand in the desert
Can you imagine going down a road in the middle of the desert, and in which middle of the excavated ground a giant hand emerges? It seems like a movie story, but it is reality, the Hand of The Desert exists and it’s in Antofagasta!
In the middle of the inhospitable Chilean desert, 75 kilometers south of the city of Antofagasta you can find this wonderful sculpture. The Hand of the Desert has a height of 11 meters and was built by the famous Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal in 1992. Since then, this work has been a tourist reference.
La Portada: an entrance to the sea
To the west of the city of Antofagasta, passing the cliffs, is La Portada. The wonderful Monument of Nature!
Known as an unmissable destination of Antofagasta, La Portada is an enormous arch of sedimentary rocks that is located in the sea and serves as a front for the infinite sea.
