Belonging to the Coquimbo Region, Ovalle is the capital city of the Limarí Province. The name of the city was given in honor of the Vice President of the Republic José Tomás Ovalle Bezanilla (1787-1831), who died shortly before the founding of the city was decreed. The city is known as "the Pearl of Limarí". Thanks to its climate and fertile lands, it is a favorable territory for the cultivation of various agricultural products such as: peaches, plums, avocados, olive trees, papayas, citrus fruits and grapes, these last ones are used mainly for the production of pisco. Agriculture together with tourism are the main economic activities of Ovalle.
In this commune you can find a rural dynamism that, despite the time, maintains traditions and celebrations, among the festivities you can find the Fiesta del Cabrito and Fiesta de La Vendimia, that are generally celebrated during the summer. Among the tourist sites of the city, the San Vicente Ferrer Church stands out, it was founded in 1680 and since 1977 has been recognized as a Historical Monument, it is located 30 km away from Ovalle. The Model Fair was inaugurated in 1983 and nowadays it is the most important agricultural fair in northern Chile.
The Limarí Museum preserves a rich archaeological heritage that includes utensils and ceramics made in the past by the Diaguita and Molle cultures, which previously populated the region. This heritage also has petroglyphs and pictographs that can be seen in Valle del Encanto and the Pichasca Natural Monument. La Barraza is a small town that attracts the attention of tourists, as it is more than 440 years old, which makes it one of the oldest towns in all of Chile and that’s why in 2011 it was proclaimed a National Monument in the category of Typical area. Finally, there is the Fray Jorge National Park, a natural reserve that was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
Ovalle offers two reservoirs, the first one is the Recoleta Reservoir, located 25 km away from the city, and has areas suitable for camping, fishing, and water sports. La Paloma Reservoir, 27 km away from Ovalle, has a capacity of 750 million cubic meters and is the largest reservoir in Chile and the second in South America.
